Pilot License Loss

Provides financial protection to pilots who lose the use of their flying licence temporarily or permanently through loss of their medical certificate, by paying the agreed benefit.

A pilot’s ability to continue in their profession depends on a valid flying licence and the medical certificate on which that licence rests. A condition identified at a periodic medical examination, an accident or an illness can leave a pilot unable to exercise their licence, temporarily or permanently, and interrupt their career unexpectedly. Loss of licence often means the loss of the pilot’s main source of income.

Pilot Loss of Licence Insurance pays a benefit, based on the sum insured stated in the policy, to a pilot unable to exercise their flying licence due to loss of their medical certificate. Permanent loss may give rise to a lump sum benefit, while temporary loss may be compensated through periodic payments depending on the policy structure. This supports the pilot financially while recovering or planning a new career. The policy can be arranged by the pilot individually or through the employer.

Who is it for?

  • Captains and first officers flying for airlines
  • Cargo, business jet and general aviation pilots
  • Helicopter and balloon pilots
  • Aviation operators wishing to arrange group cover for their pilots

Scope of cover

  • Permanent loss of licence: lump sum benefit on permanent loss of the medical certificate
  • Temporary loss of licence: periodic payment options after an agreed waiting period
  • Accident and sickness: loss of the medical certificate due to either cause
  • Individual and group policies: arranged by pilots themselves or by their employers
  • Sum insured: benefit amount set according to the pilot’s income and career stage
  • Optional extensions for personal accident and death benefits

Scope of cover, limits and deductibles are determined by the insurer’s general and special conditions; the final scope is set out in the policy.

The Proxima Brokers approach

We assess your licence type, type of operation, income and career plans to determine the right sum insured and cover structure. We compare the policy terms that determine the final scope, such as waiting periods, the definition of permanent loss and exclusions, and place cover in specialist markets. At renewal we update your sum insured, and in a claim we guide you in preparing the medical documentation.
